There are four simple ways to help turn your good associates into great associates.

Listen to them. The associates quite possibly know aspects of your business better than you do. Ask them how to make themselves more productive, how to make their functions more enjoyable, how to to make them even more valuable to your clients. The responses will amaze you, and, they will work!

Inspire them. Associates who feel valued, who feel their boss knows what they do for the company, who have a sense of pride in their work will help drive your business to new heights. A simple, specific e-mail about a task done well will engender great pride in an associate. Bringing in a lunch after a difficult project is complete allows you to express your thanks for their work.

Help them grow. Teaching an associate new skills is possibly the best investment of your time. It provides the associate with an enhanced self concept, and it can free you up to focus on other tasks.

Provide them with firm, respectful guidance. Associates do not want a friend, they want a mentor or leader. Maintaining that role with your associates will provide them with the direction they need to succeed in their responsibilities.

Remember the golden rule. Treating others as you want to be treated assures positive work relationships.
