Planning Your Business

Planning Your Business

Planning is critical to starting and building a business. We've provided a link to an assessment, and information on the local organizations that can help you get ready—from developing a business plan to developing a business network.

In the earliest stage of business development you should be focused on refining a concept, exploring the market potential, researching competitors and vendors, and evaluating your personal situation.

Some questions to ask include:

  • Is now the right time for this business?
  • Am I in a position to risk personal assets to get a business started?
  • Do I have the time to invest in growing this business?
  • Do I have the resources (cash, collateral, credit, etc) that a lender would require?
  • What’s the worst that could happen? Can I live with that?
  • While no business starts with all the questions answered, getting what you DO know on paper helps to reduce the risks associated with what you DON’T know.
