Starting Your Business

Starting Your Business

Starting a business requires you to complete a number of steps and make some key decisions. Within this section, we’ll identify the organizations that can help you in starting your business.

License And Permits

Before opening your business in the City of Greenville, you will need to obtain several permits and licenses such as a Certificate of Occupancy Permit, Business License, and building permits if renovating an existing building or constructing a new space. For a checklist of the required permits for starting a business in the City of Greenville, please go to: www.greenvillesc.gov/Revenue/forms/NewCityBusinessChecklist.pdf.

The City also has a business license abatement program which provides an abatement of 100% in the first year of operation, 66% in the second year and 33% in the third year for qualified types of businesses locating in designated areas of the City. Any qualified business issued a business license permit for less than a six month period in its first taxable year of operation may elect to extend its 100 percent abatement to the second taxable year provided it pays 50 percent of the tax otherwise due in the third taxable year.
